Distancia is an energetic work for young bands that evokes excitement and mystery, both in the rhythmic drive of the piece and the B-flat harmonic minor scale on which it is built. A frenetic opening sets the mood, shifting to a number of percussive elements that sustain the drive and intensity of the piece. The leveled orchestration exposes a haunting melody in the upper woodwinds while the percussion and brass add a bold determination to the texture. The middle of the piece is a beautiful, yet simple song, presented by a flute soloist and supported by the warmth and richness of the rest of the woodwind section. The transition once again returns to the stacking of B-flat harmonic minor pitches, creating tension and excitement that builds to an aggressive conclusion.
