Spirit of the Bells was written for the George Washington & Howard Elementary School band programs of Madera, California, both led by Diego Zarate-White, a former student of the composer. This composition is meant to serve as a fun piece for students who have been playing for a year or more. With the use of a very simple sleigh bell part in the percussion section, and some slight hints at some familiar holiday melodies, the work can easily be part of a December or winter concert. The wind parts are limited to an octave or less and the percussion parts are equally achievable. The relaxed tempo also makes this composition work well for young bands. Instrumentation is flexible.
